What Is a Medieval Jacket?
When we talk about a medieval jacket, we mean a long-sleeved garment primarily designed to keep you warm. Historically, the jacket as we know it today only emerged during the Renaissance. However, that doesn't mean there were no warming outer layers in the Middle Ages! Even the Vikings used woolen coats to keep themselves warm in winter. The medieval doublet was typical for a knight, even though it wasn't a jacket in the modern sense. In general, a medieval jacket in LARP is worn as the outermost clothing layer and is made from sturdier fabric than the layers beneath. Since a jacket or coat is a very central part of your outfit, it becomes a recognizable feature of your LARP character.
Historical Jackets: How Were They Worn?
Historical jackets, whether from the Renaissance or the Middle Ages, were often closable at the front and were never worn directly on the skin — just like our modern jackets. What is modern and did not exist in medieval jackets and coats are integrated hoods. To protect the head from rain, people back then used medieval cloaks with hoods or the cowl.
