Medieval Tunic for LARP and Renaissance Fairs

The medieval tunic for men is often the centerpiece of any LARP outfit, whether you're portraying an ancient character, a medieval hero, or something more fantastical. This garment plays a key role in defining the look of your fantasy or medieval character.
It’s what helps others recognize exactly who—or what—you are. If you're aiming for a classic Viking warrior, a medieval tunic for men is a must-have. Even a medieval crusader benefits from wearing a high-quality tunic underneath their tabard.

Fantasy characters enjoy even more freedom when it comes to choosing a tunic. It’s all about your personal style and how you imagine your character—whether that’s a dwarf warrior or an elven mage. If you’re looking to buy a medieval tunic, you’re in the right place with Andracor. Our medieval tunics are made from 100% cotton and are suitable for all genders. Any men’s medieval tunic can easily be worn as a women’s tunic; just choose a smaller size if needed.

Fantasy Tunic or Leather Jerkin – What Do Elves and Dwarves Wear?

Elves are often portrayed in tunics with elegant, flowing lines or fitted leather jerkins, sometimes decorated with intricate embroidery. Dwarves, on the other hand, are known for their love of sturdy, rough fabrics, often layering a simple undergarment with a heavy tunic or even a leather tunic. Of course, these are just classic examples. How you style your fantasy tunic is entirely up to your imagination.

Was the Tunic the Only Garment in the Middle Ages?

The term medieval tunic is widely used but can sometimes be misleading. The tunic has been a staple garment since antiquity, and variations of it still influence modern fashion today. Shirts evolved gradually from tunics and became common in later eras like the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The transition from tunic to shirt was gradual, but the classic medieval tunic remains historically accurate for the Middle Ages.

In fact, the tunic’s origins go back even further. The ancient Greeks wore it as the chiton, and the Romans had versions like the legionary tunic. Whether you’re attending a medieval fair or a fantasy LARP, tunics and historical shirts are the quickest and easiest way to look the part. Historical accuracy for items like a Viking tunic is often relaxed—unless you’re participating in a strict reenactment. In that case, researching the correct cut and materials is recommended. Most of our clothing, especially tunics, make excellent foundations for any costume.

Medieval Tunic – What’s the Best Fabric?

For LARP, breathable fabrics are essential, no one wants to be stuck in polyester for an entire weekend. That’s why we recommend cotton or linen for your tunic. Not only are they comfortable, but they also look authentic and match the historical setting perfectly.
Fabrics have changed far less over time than fashion itself. Linen was historically the most common material for clothing like a medieval tunic or a Roman tunic. Vikings also used linen for their undertunics and medieval underdresses. While cotton was already known, it was rare in Europe, primarily grown and processed in India and the Middle East.

The second layer of a tunic was usually made of wool. Wool varies in quality but remains the best choice for staying warm and dry. Undertunics were often undyed—showing a natural, off-white color—while outer tunics were dyed in various colors depending on status and wealth. Expensive fabrics like silk, cotton, or weaves such as damask and brocade were reserved for the upper classes, which is why you’ll typically see nobles in LARP wearing them. A tunic decorated with patterned trim also signals wealth. Our in-house Andracor tunics are made from 100% cotton with a canvas linen look and come in classic colors like black, brown, and natural, as well as vibrant shades like blue, green, and red. Find your perfect medieval tunic today and start your adventure!
