19th-century American clothing was always a little more practical and functional than its European counterparts of the time. Perhaps it was because the West was truly wild or the cotton plantations of the South were dusty? In any case, our US Civil War shirt is a good example of this. Its cut is fully in line with a tuxedo shirt, but it doesn't make a big deal out of hidden button plackets or the requirement for cufflinks.
