Short introduction to the history of witches and how they can occur on a Larp

Witches are women who use pagan magic, rituals and spells. The hunt for witches and witchcraft in general is particularly associated with the Middle Ages, although most witch witch trials took place in the Renaissance or in the 17th century.

The efforts of the Catholic Church to eradicate other religions, referred to as paganism, is considered one of the great driving forces behind the persecution of witches. Works such as the infamous witch hammer must have really caused hysteria among superstitious people. However, far more witches were condemned by secular courts than in the end by the church.

The fear of the practices of witches was great, as it was believed that these women were in league with the devil and thus performed healings and other „miraculous things“. The fact that these witches were often only experts in obstetrics and herbology hardly played a role, especially when these witches fulfilled the typical outward characteristics. These were red hair and also moles, which were interpreted as devil marks. Witches could either adhere to Catholicism or a belief in nature. Still today there are witches who belong to this religion.

The witch as a character in Larp

Witches are also played as a character at Larp conventions. Here they actually have magical powers and are sometimes very powerful. There are malicious witches in the ranks of the undead. But also witches who are actually of good nature and only want to help, so they go more into a direction of a Mage or Sorceress. Which Larp witch you choose is totally up to you. Of course you can also play a witcher or a witch as a man.

What can make the game of a witch attractive is her ambivalent character. You can act good-natured and yet pursue evil ulterior motives. As a witch, you can play an exciting healing game and earn good money at a Larp with potions, tinctures and herbal teas.

Witchcraft in Larp

The active use of magic is of course another point that makes the witch interesting as a larp character. This can range from simple healing spells to love spells and necromantic abilities to summon the dead.

The appearance of witches can vary greatly, of course. From the old herbal woman with a hat, to the beautiful natural druid, to the nasty and powerful dark sorceress a la Malefiz.
